The Vault is dedicated to storing cool, interesting, and unique information and links regarding the arguably all-time-best American rock band R.E.M.!

Formed in 1980 in Athens, Georgia. They were pioneers of the alternative rock movement, blending jangly guitar melodies, cryptic lyrics, and Michael Stipe’s distinctive vocals. The band gained mainstream success with albums like Document (1987), Green (1988), and Out of Time (1991), which featured the hit “Losing My Religion.” Their music evolved from post-punk and folk influences to a more polished, arena-ready sound in the 1990s. R.E.M. disbanded in 2011 but remains one of the most influential alternative rock bands of all time.
“R.E.M. was the band that made being in an alternative rock band possible.” — Thom Yorke (Radiohead) | “R.E.M. invented a genre. They took punk and pop, threw in a love of folk and a gift for mystery, and made something that had never been heard before.” — Cameron Crowe (Film Director & Journalist) | “They were a truly democratic band—no frontman, no spotlight hogging, just a collective force that changed the face of rock music.” — Bono (U2) |
